About Bharatia

One of the most pressing challenges in our fight against climate change is the dismally slow pace at which innovative technologies are commercialised and scaled. Despite the urgent need for solutions, many groundbreaking inventions never make it beyond the lab. If these technologies are not rapidly brought to market and applied for the greater good, their potential remains untapped, and the effort of inventing them is wasted.

The Bharat Technology & Impact Accelerator (bharatia) was established with a clear and ambitious mission: to accelerate the commercialisation and scaling of technology-driven solutions that have the potential to make a significant impact. BHARATIA is pioneering a new approach to solving global challenges, particularly those of emerging markets and developing economies. Initially concentrating on the Environment, Energy, and Sustainability sectors, BHARATIA is committed to bringing these critical technologies to market quickly, ensuring they can be deployed where they are most needed.

However, BHARATIA’s vision extends beyond just climate action. Recognising that the same urgency and innovation are needed in other critical areas, BHARATIA is poised to expand its impact across a wide range of sectors. These include Cybersecurity, Digital Systems, Advanced Manufacturing, Healthcare, and Education, among others. Each of these fields represents a frontier where technological innovation can drive meaningful change, and BHARATIA is determined to be at the forefront of this movement.

By bridging the gap between invention and implementation, BHARATIA is not just fostering technological advancement but ensuring that these advancements lead to real-world solutions. In doing so, BHARATIA is setting a new standard for what it means to be an Impact Accelerator, demonstrating that with the right support and focus, the technologies of today can become the solutions of tomorrow.

The Genesis

The concept of Bharatia began its journey several years ago as an embedded component of the Centre for Ganga River Basin Management and Studies (cGanga) at the Indian Institute of Technology - Kanpur (IIT Kanpur). cGanga serves as a think tank, innovation hub, and master planner dedicated to the restoration of rivers under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India, and the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG).

Initially, cGanga developed the Environment and Technology Verification (ETV) process to address systemic issues related to water resources and pollution. Over time, this programme evolved from merely verifying and validating technologies to conceptualising and implementing impactful projects. Its scope expanded to cover adjacent sectors such as energy, decarbonisation, waste management, agriculture, urban planning, water-resource management, digital systems, IoT, artificial intelligence, and remote sensing using satellites.

In addressing these diverse sectors, it became evident that a common challenge was the gap between technology, finance, and policy. This realisation led to the creation of Bharatia.

Going forward, Bharatia assumes the delivery of the ETV programme.

Governance and Structure

Samarth Ganga Foundation

Rooted in the River Ganga (Ganges) rejuvenation and restoration initiative, the organisation was named “Samarth Ganga Foundation” to reflect its origins. “Samarth,” meaning competent, complete, or able, embodies the vision of nurturing and restoring nature.

Established as a non-profit entity under Section-8 of the Companies Act of India, the Foundation operates as a company limited by guarantee. The brand name "Bharatia" represents the comprehensive delivery program of the Samarth Ganga Foundation.

Purpose

Bharatia aims to tackle grand challenges by launching pioneering (First-of-a-Kind or FOAK) projects and scaling them (Nth-of-a-Kind or NOAK) for global impact. The initiative employs advanced technology commercialisation models (ETV-VIPERS process) and innovative financing models (CETFI - Climate and Energy Transition Initiative) to diffuse solutions worldwide.

To achieve this vision, Bharatia has established dedicated programs designed to drive significant progress and transformation.

Grand Challenges

Bharatia tackles grand systemic challenges by employing a multifaceted approach that combines technological innovation with strategic financial and policy solutions. By focusing on accelerating the development and deployment of cutting-edge technologies, Bharatia ensures that these advancements are brought to market swiftly and effectively. This acceleration is supported by innovative financing mechanisms designed to bridge funding gaps and stimulate investment in high-impact solutions. Additionally, Bharatia leverages novel policy approaches to create an environment conducive to breakthrough innovations. This holistic strategy not only addresses immediate needs but also ensures long-term sustainability and scalability. Through this comprehensive framework, Bharatia aims to drive transformative change and solve complex problems that have far-reaching implications for society and the environment.

Environment and Technology Verification (ETV) Programme

The Environment & Technology Verification (ETV) is the most comprehensive technology commercialisation and acceleration programme for India that extends to all emerging markets.

The process delivers the following:
> Technology validation for India and other emerging markets
> Creating a supply chain, partner and delivery eco-system in India extending to other emerging markets
> A market entry pathway for the high-impact technology solutions
> Establishing the First of a Kind (FOAK) commercial demonstration project
> Scaling up of technology in India and other emerging markets - Nth of a Kind (NOAK)

First-of-a-Kind (FOAK) Impact Project

Each grand challenge is addressed through a First-of-a-Kind (FOAK) project, which Bharatia advances from concept to implementation. These FOAK projects unite a diverse range of stakeholders and collaborators, pooling capital, expertise, and other resources to turn innovative ideas into reality.

Nth-of-a-Kind (NOAK) Impact Projects

Moulding a singular implementation of a project to a highly replicable and scalable global solution requires approaches that are both fit-for-purpose and scalable. Availability of finance and innTransforming a unique project implementation into a globally replicable and scalable solution requires both tailored and scalable approaches. Access to finance and innovative structures is crucial for scaling solutions effectively. To facilitate this transition from First-of-a-Kind (FOAK) to Nth-of-a-Kind (NOAK), Bharatia has launched a significant climate finance program named the "Climate and Energy Transition Finance Initiative (CETFI)." This initiative is designed to provide the necessary financial and structural support to scale innovative solutions. Bharatia is initiating its asset management functions via a FOAK-fund (for the first of a kind solutions) and a NOAK fund (Nth of a kind solutions) to scale solutions up.

The Climate & Energy Transition Finance Initiative (CETFI) is a multi-stakeholder and a coalition of the willing to bring new financing structures and instruments to market. Focusing predominantly on the global south, CETFI was initiated during India’s G20 presidency with the participation of the global financial community, industry and the Government of India. CETFI is progressing with a soft launch approach so as to increase the understanding of critical issues related to climate finance. It is also developing new models of financing jointly with industry and introducing those through commercial demonstration projects.
