Municipalities of Maharashtra gather to discuss decentralised waste water treatment and sludge management solutions

Updated: Aug 6

Centre for Ganga River Basin Management and Studies (cGanga) and Bharatia organised a workshop in Pune, Maharashtra for the officers and operators of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Pune Municipal Corp (PMC), Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), all Municipal Councils under Pune Division, and Maharashtra Jal Pradhikaran (MJP).

The focus was on novel & noble approaches to decentralised wastewater management and sludge management. About 60 officers from these administrative bodies participated in the workshop.

With increasing urbanisation, we are witnessing limits of traditionally deployed large centralised systems for sewage treatment. A novel approach to treat sewage near sources and within the community ward level is needed to ensure treatment effectiveness and opportunities for non-potable reuse. Sludge management and disposal is another major constraint of administrative bodies. cGanga has issued a policy paper on STP Sludge Management based on data backed evidence across India & after review of available technologies to manage the sludge.

Participants discussed:

  • New technologies to recycle, reuse wastewater at or near the point of generation.

  • What are the economics of creating a market for water recycle and reuse.

  • How to price treated waste-water?

  • With increasing number of installations of sewage treatment plants (STPs) across the country, what are the challenges related to sludge management?
