Scoring

Readiness Levels and Scoring

In a rapidly advancing technological landscape, project sponsors, investors, and developers often find it challenging to accurately gauge the maturity of technology. Combining qualitative analysis with quantitative metrics offers a streamlined assessment methodology for evaluators. The ETV process utilises three "Readiness" scores to provide a comprehensive insight into the technology's maturity. These are:

TRL - Technology Readiness Level

CRL - Commercialisation Readiness Level

IRL - Impact Readiness Level

Technology Readiness Levels (TRL)

  • Measured on a scale of 1-9, the TRL scores demonstrate the technology's maturity.

  • TRL Level 1: technology is still in its concept stage.

  • TRL Level 2: technology has been conceptualised with proper scientific and technical research.

  • TRL Level 3: technology has been demonstrated via a proof of concept.

  • TRL Level 4: technology has a "lab" or "bench" scale demonstration.

  • TRL Level 5: technology has been demonstrated at a pilot level.

  • TRL Level 6: technology is under demonstration of a large scale, commercial demonstration site.

  • TRL Level 7: technology / project is under inactive commissioning.

  • TRL Level 8: technology / project is under active commissioning at one or more sites.

  • TRL Level 9: technology / project is under operation at one or more sites.

CRL

Commercialisation Readiness Levels (CRL)

  • Measured on a scale of 1-9, the CRL scores demonstrate the technology's commercialisation maturity.

  • CRL Level 1: basic understanding of commercialisation model.

  • CRL Level 2: good understanding of the markets.

  • CRL Level 3: complete commercialisation team in place.

  • CRL Level 4: commercialisation and channel partners in place.

  • CRL Level 5: supply chain defined in both developed and emerging markets.

  • CRL Level 6: ability to issue various guarantees - bank, performance, bid-bonds etc.

  • CRL Level 7: complete understanding of capex and unit/lifecycle costs in various operating conditions.

  • CRL Level 8: references to commercial contracts available.

  • CRL Level 9: ability to offer solution-as-a-service (utility model).

IRL

Impact Readiness Levels (IRL)

  • Measured on a scale of 1-9, the IRL scores demonstrate the technology's maturity.

  • IRL Level 1: technology solution is in the climate/environmental sector.

  • IRL Level 2: solution has the ability to generate livelihood in the local area.

  • IRL Level 3: solution can have a demonstrable impact in the local area.

  • IRL Level 4: technology is first-of-a-kind in the country.

  • IRL Level 5: solution can generate livelihood as well as increase income levels.

  • IRL Level 6: solution has a demonstrable impact on the national level.

  • IRL Level 7: solution is enables / introduces new economic model globally.

  • IRL Level 8: solution is first-of-a-kind globally.

  • IRL Level 9: solution has a transformational impact globally.

NOTE: The IRL scoring presented is for climate and environmental technologies. A different IRL scoring metric is required for other sectors.
